Back in 2009, my review of Ben & Jack’s was one of the first posts on this humble food blog. In the post I praised how successfully Ben and Jack were able to transfer the Luger’s experience into the heart of the city, and in the process added a bit of humanity – credit cards.
So 4 years later I found myself having almost the same food, except this time at the newer, 5th Avenue location. The building which houses the original restaurant is being converted into a hotel, but fear not UN diplomats in Midtown, for when the building’s complete, Ben & Jack’s will once again open at the same address to serve porterhouse to UN dignitaries.
As Ben and Jack has shown no difficulties in translating the Luger’s formula into their own, they had even less trouble moving the experience a few blocks south. The two story, 5th Avenue location receives much more foot traffic than the original, and even has a few tables of outdoor dining. I can only imagine the eyes of tourists walking by when a sizzling porterhouse is served.
I could easily use 4 year old photos here and you wouldn’t know the difference, which is exactly what I look for in a steakhouse. Ben & Jack’s continues to serve up top notch steaks, aged to perfection, grilled to a char on the service, and served with jus. If you’ve read our carnivorous adventures at Luger’s, Benjamin’s, Empire, Wolfgang’s, you’ll know that we have the system down pat. Tomatoes, Canadian Beacon, Porterhouse, Creamed Spinach, Holy Bull Sundae.
This is steak house done right.
