4 years ago when I started writing about restaurants, I knew absolutely nothing about wines. Ordering a cocktail at the dinner table because a refuge for my lack of knowledge.
Then I attended a wine event, and another. Soon I was planning trips to wine country and reading books about wine making. I still can’t name all types of pastas, but the varietals of grapes I am starting to grasp.
For me, it’s an absolutely joy to listen to wine makers explain their history, methods, and terrior….. then taste the wine and make a judgement for yourself. Better yet, having the ability to taste different wines back to back really gives you the ability to compare and contrast, and taste the unique intricacies of each wine.
Whether you’re a oenophile, or have no clue what that word means, events like Toast the Town is a blast. Presented by Wine Enthusiast, this year’s event will be held at the Hammerstein Ballroom on May 3rd. Events are currently on sale at http://www.toastofthetown.com/2012_tott_ny.asp.
Tickets aren’t “cheap”, but consider what you’re getting. The chance to taste some of the world’s best wines, chat with world famous wine makers, and enjoy food from some of my favorite restaurants, including Tocqueville, Triomphe, SD26.
See you guys there, buy your tickets today before they sell out.
