I’ve never met a person who doesn’t like a Mille Crêpes cake from Lady M. I’m not a cake person, but I’d have a slice following any meal. 20 paper thin slices of hand made crêpes, stacked with cream and a caramelized sugar top.
The Lady M obsession is global, despite only having a tiny storefront and a handful of cramped seats on the Upper East Side. They call it a boutique rather than a bakery, and rightfully so. Behind the glass display the meticulously decorated cakes rival any of the couture found on nearby Madison Avenue.
At any point in the day, the boutique’s usually packed with ladies having tea, tourists savoring the UES experience, and people lining up for a slice, or a decadent 9″ cake. The prices aren’t cheap. 6″ crêpes cakes are $40, and the 9″ cost $75. I used to call them expensive, until I tried a slice. Now they’re a worthwhile guilty pleasure.
Up until earlier this year, there was a strict no photo policy at Lady M, perhaps due to the large number of tourists clamoring for a shot of the Mille Crêpes. In today’s food-photography obsessed world, the rule and the signage has been removed. I didn’t know, so I bought take-out and took the cake 2 blocks over to central park for an impromptu photo session before digging in.
Hands down the best cake in the city. Prepare a cake at home, and I won’t fault you for skipping dessert at a great restaurant.
