Coffee is a definite addiction. However, whether you have it with breakfast or for breakfast or at every occasion of the day, I think it’s worth wrangling with.
Some like it black, and that seems to show strength of character. I think just have it the way you like it. My personal favorite is with maple syrup and a splash of milk. If you want to try a new variation, ask an intern. I understand that additives dim the flavor, so if you get something nice and pricey, maybe try it black before you do your idiosyncratic violence to it.
Porto Rico Importing Company is a place to find beans that you might like to enjoy naked and roasted. It has two downtown locations at St. Mark’s place and Bleecker Street. It blatantly says in both places “no photos…because the owner said so” but I still snuck in a couple at the Bleeker Street flagship. In my defense, I didn’t have the idea in my head to be sneaky until I had waited 7 or 8 minutes, being ignored. Mission still accomplished, I walked out miffed, but with pictures and coffee from Sumatra and Hawaii. Truthfully I am uncertain how good they actually are, my palette is not quite so calibrated, but given the variety, you are bound to find something wakes you up in the morning (Sold in convenient half-pound increments if you’re afraid to venture into blends too exotic). Both establishments also carry large selections of coffee paraphernalia, from quirky cups to cold brew coffee makers. If actually making coffee is too much of a burden, the Bleeker Street location has a barista on hand in the back of the store.
If you are inclined to make coffee, but live too far to make the street and smell the coffee beans, their website is very user friendly and you can browse there and hope for the best. They even carry Exotic Civet Coffee from the Philippines, but it will cost you $340/lb. The things we do for love.
Whatever kind of relationship you have cultivated with coffee, Porto Rico Importing Co. probably has something for you. Meaning, if you are past the point of no return, there is tea.
