Marcony: Staycation Food Hailing from Capri

I don’t quite know how to feel about Italian food, their menu entries are usually too impressive and the butter too well hidden. Dining at Marcony was no different, but regardless of the harmless deception, the food was solid and on the whole, satisfying.

The theme isn’t immediately apparent. Turning around from where I sitting, I was a little bewildered to find myself looking at a blue lizard perched on pebbles. I vaguely remembered their Capri background, but the association from island to indigenous lizard is not exactly intuitive. Despite their unusual mascot, the blue splashed around the dining rooms is a nice accent.

The blue lizard makes many appearances.

I dropped by for lunch and plopped myself down in their small space outside. I might have picked up an asymmetric tan given where I was sitting, but that’s a small risk to take for lunch. Plus, their indoor dining room is rather large (two floors!) and very comfortable looking.

The space is quite impressive.

The meal started off with a fruit filled red wine sangria, very delicious and a perfect way to start lunch on a hot day. The menu presents the usual fare of handmade fresh pasta with a dazzling selection of sausage meats, sauce, and seafood. My friend Kate had the ravioli of the day, filled up with broccoli, and bathed in marinara. Definitely not a bad showing for something stuffed with broccoli.

Having started off heavy with the bread, I got the Passera Di Mare, which was a nice filet of flounder, pretty juicy on its own but aided and abetted by the cream lemon sauce. The crab meat was a nice touch, it appeals to my soft spot for seafood.

Dessert for us was a blood orange lemon mousse. A little sweet to be sure, and the crusted bottom soaked up the sauce a little too well. It could be a bias towards French desserts, but it wasn’t the strongest showing.

If you’re in the mood for pasta, the feel of the Marcony is a nice change from the fireplace ambiance that Italian places give off. What their website calls a yacht-like interior is definitely season appropriate, and better yet, their food’s not too shabby either.
